Papa John's Cardinal Stadium opened on September 5, 1998 after breaking ground in June 1996. Funded privately, the stadium was built on the land of the former South Louisville Rail Yard [1]. The stadium opened with a seating capacity of 42,000 and an ability to expand to 80,000. The university's first expansion of the stadium started in 2008 and finishing in 2010, when the venue's seating was increased to 55,000. The stadium was renovated again starting in 2015, with construction finishing 3 years later; the stadium's new total capacity was 60,800. At the same time, Papa John's naming rights to the stadium, which were set to run through 2040, were terminated after it came to light that owner John Schnatter used a racial slur in a meeting. From 2018 until 2023, the field was named only Cardinal Stadium, though in early January 2023, L&N Federal Credit Union, whose original 1954 grounds had been shared with the stadium's current location, purchased the stadium's naming rights for the next 20 years [1].
