After learning in October 1993 that Charlotte had been accepted to host a new NFL expansion team starting in 1995, the Carolina Panthers' ownership group began enacting their plans to construct a venue for that team to play in. Bank of American Stadium (briefly Carolinas Stadium, then Ericsson Stadium from 1996-2004) broke ground in April 1994, with plans of opening in June 1996. The intermediate season was played in Clemson's Memorial Stadium.

The stadium opened with a capacity of 72,685. That number gradually increased until 2020, when the venue's capacity reached its maximum capacity of 75,523. As part of the venue's conversion to a Major League Soccer stadium, which required the removal of some seats from the lower portion of the bowl for so-called "bunker" seating, the capacity was reduced slightly; since 2021, the venue has seated 74,867 spectators. Besides the conversion to an MLS-compatible stadium, renovations have been fairly meager: in 2007, the stadium received a new video board, which was itself replaced in 2014; in 2015, a luxury zone and private seats were added. Concurrent with the conversion to an MLS venue, the stadium's grass was changed to turf for the very first time [1] [2].
